What's the difference between a simple and surgical extraction?

Simple extractions remove teeth that are fully visible above the gum line and can be loosened and removed with specialized instruments. These procedures typically take 20 to 30 minutes and cause minimal discomfort during recovery. Surgical extractions are more complex, involving teeth that haven’t fully erupted, are broken below the gum line, or have curved roots making removal difficult. We make a small incision in your gum tissue to access the tooth and may need to remove some surrounding bone or section the tooth into pieces for easier removal. Surgical extractions typically take 45 minutes to over an hour and may involve slightly longer recovery periods.

How long does recovery from tooth extraction take?

Most patients recover from simple extractions within three to five days, returning to normal activities quickly. Surgical extractions may require five to seven days for initial healing, though complete tissue healing takes several weeks. The first 24 to 48 hours involve the most discomfort and swelling, which then improves steadily. You’ll need to stick with soft foods for about a week and avoid strenuous activity for a few days. The blood clot that forms in the extraction site is crucial for healing and takes about two weeks to be replaced by new tissue. Following our aftercare instructions carefully speeds recovery and prevents complications.

Will tooth extraction hurt?

The extraction itself won’t hurt because we thoroughly numb the area with local anesthesia before beginning. You’ll feel pressure and movement during the procedure but no sharp pain. If you feel any discomfort during extraction, let us know immediately so we can administer additional anesthesia. After the numbing wears off, you’ll experience some soreness for a few days, which most patients manage effectively with prescribed pain medication or over-the-counter options. Many patients report the anticipation was worse than the actual experience. We offer sedation options for patients who feel anxious about the procedure, ensuring your comfort throughout.

What is dry socket and how do I prevent it?

Dry socket occurs when the blood clot protecting your extraction site dislodges or dissolves prematurely, exposing the bone underneath and causing significant pain. This complication typically develops three to four days after extraction and creates a throbbing ache that may radiate to your ear. Prevent dry socket by avoiding straws, smoking, and spitting vigorously for at least a week after extraction. Don’t rinse your mouth aggressively or disturb the extraction site with your tongue. Smoking significantly increases dry socket risk, so we strongly recommend avoiding tobacco for several days. If you develop severe pain after initially feeling better, contact us immediately for treatment.

What should I do immediately after my tooth extraction?

Bite down gently on the gauze we provide for 30 to 45 minutes to help form a protective blood clot. Avoid rinsing, spitting, or touching the extraction site for the first 24 hours. Apply ice packs to your face for 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off during the first day to minimize swelling. Take pain medication as prescribed before the anesthesia completely wears off. Rest with your head elevated on pillows to reduce swelling. Avoid strenuous activity, smoking, and drinking through straws. Starting the next day, gently rinse with warm salt water several times daily to keep the area clean. We provide detailed written instructions to guide you through each stage of recovery.

Can all my problem teeth be extracted in one appointment?

Yes, we can extract multiple teeth during a single visit in most cases, which many patients prefer to minimize the number of surgical appointments and recovery periods. Removing all your wisdom teeth at once is very common, and we frequently extract several damaged teeth simultaneously when preparing for dentures or implants. The decision depends on factors like the teeth’s locations, the complexity of each extraction, your overall health, and your preference. Multiple extractions may require slightly longer recovery time, but many patients find one comprehensive recovery period more convenient than several separate healing periods. We’ll recommend the approach that makes the most sense for your specific situation during your consultation.

Can I eat normally after tooth extraction?

You’ll need to modify your diet temporarily to protect the extraction site during healing. Stick with soft, cool foods like yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs for the first few days. Avoid using the extraction side for chewing initially, and never use straws since the suction can dislodge your blood clot. Do I need to replace an extracted tooth?

Missing front teeth obviously affect your appearance and can impact speech and eating comfort. Bridges and partial dentures offer alternative solutions depending on your situation. We’ll discuss replacement timing and options during your extraction appointment, though some patients choose to wait several months before replacement to allow complete healing.

What complications should I watch for after extraction?

Contact us immediately if you experience excessive bleeding that doesn’t stop with gentle pressure after 30 minutes, severe pain that worsens after three days instead of improving, or swelling that increases significantly after 48 hours. Fever above 101°F, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or pus discharge from the extraction site require prompt attention. Numbness lasting beyond the expected timeframe or a bad taste that doesn’t improve with salt water rinses may indicate infection.

I can’t say enough good things about this place. I originally made an appointment for both myself and my child. For me, I’ve had ongoing jaw pain and was thinking I might need my wisdom teeth removed. The dentist did a full evaluation and told me that my wisdom teeth are perfectly healthy, coming in straight, and don’t need to be removed. He explained that my pain is likely from strong jaw muscles and suggested a mouth guard instead. That honesty meant so much to me because I’ve had several dentists in the past try to push wisdom teeth removal “just because.” It was refreshing to finally meet a dentist who put my health first instead of recommending an unnecessary procedure. As for my child, he had a tongue-tie procedure done today, and the entire staff was absolutely wonderful. They were so patient, kind, and genuinely caring. One woman in particular showed such warmth and compassion that it almost felt like she was his own mom. The surgery itself was quick and smooth, and he bounced back immediately. He was up and playing as soon as we got home. The honesty, professionalism, and compassion we experienced here were above and beyond. I just experienced my first surgery ever today here and was super anxious about the whole situation, especially the anesthesia part. I really appreciated Dr. Bhatti and all the nurses involved for being very patient and understanding and giving me a second. The anesthesia was not painful or scary like I initially thought it would be and I had an easy time waking up and it didn’t feel like the videos you normally see where patients are completely out of it. It was a seamless process and I’ve already stopped bleeding and working towards recovery.

The front desk staff were so helpful in working with me to schedule the appointment, and every person we interacted with in the office was kind, welcoming, and patient. The staff assisting the doctor were incredibly comforting—explaining each step clearly, answering all of our questions, and even helping my daughter to the car afterward. The doctor was professional, thorough, and made us feel completely at ease throughout the process. The practice is impressively efficient, but never at the expense of patient care or compassion.
